THE JAPANESE DESTROYERS.
SUCCESSFUL WORK OUTSIDE THE PORT. BOMBARDING THE TOWN. RUSSIAN GUNS SILENCED. LONDON, April 18. Another Japanese destroyer flotilla, employed on a special mission, encountered, at dawn on the 13th in«t., outside the south-east promontory of Port Arthur, a large Russian destroyer, and sank her in tea minutes. They attacked another off Liatishan, but, owing to the long range, were unable to prevent her re-entering the harbour. Two Japanese Bailors were wounded. The Japanese were unable to rescue drowning Rossiaas as the Bayan had approached. The vessel, however, was soon repulsed. Later on the action became general. During the night of the 14th inst. Admiral Togo eaye a destroyer successfully executed a mission at the mouth of the harbour. Later on the Russian fleet detected three Russian floating mines, and sunk them by gun fire. The Nisahin and Kasuga, at ten in the morning, opened an indirect cannonade on the inner harbour, their high-angled guns enabling them to reach elevated hind works beyond the elevation of the other ships. They finally silenced the new foits west of Liaotisban.
