Two residents of Pin* Hill had & narrow escape of being &hot last, night. While proceeding home a gun was fired from a •hedge some 40yds away, the bultot whi«ing past their beads. The police are inquiring into the matter.
The charge against Ramsay and Cahna of assault and robbery was resumed today, end further adjourned. Thei evidence called showed that the men were driving in a carfc with their faces blacked. A saddle and bridle, which they axe alleged to have stolen -with the trap and horse, were found this jmorning in a bush at Maori Hill, where the £290 they ere supposed to have stolen from Reid is also said to be planted. The New Zealand and , Australian Land Company's Edendale estate, Southland, has been inspected by members of the Land Purchase Board, and it is understood that it will be favourably reported on to the Government as being suitable for purchase under the Land Settlement* Act. It is probable that the estate will be secured for close eettlement.
The CSty Council has accepted a tender, of £18,330 for the.Lee stream hydraulic works tunnel, and one of £3940 for the supply of two miles of 30in pipe« in connection with the water supply power for the electric tramways. The tunnel will take two years to complete. Regarding the price of butter, it is understood that the depression on the Home market is due to the competition of Siberian butter. The secretary of the Peninsula Milk Company says that what is required in New Zealand is not co much an increase of output ac the raising of the standard of quality in order to successfully compete with Russia.
