OBITUARY.

MR F. LE CREN,

News was received yesterday of the death of Mr Frederic Le Cren, of Timoru, who Jteld the position of manager there of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company from April, 1875, to December lost, wiien he resigned owing to ill-health. 'Mr Le Greu, who was.67 at the. time of his death, waa educated at the Blue Coat School. London, and after some time spent in Melbourne in the days of the diggunjs. came to Lyttelton in the early days. His brother, the late- Mr H. J. Le Cren, had arrived in Lyttelton prior to the arrival oi the first four ships, and acted as agent for ■the bwusrs of the historic vessels who had chartered them to the Canterbury Association. He established himself in business in Lyttelton when Mr Frederic Le Cren came from Australia. Subsequently Mr F. Le Cren took over the management of tha ferry over the Heathoote, which was thnm the only means by which the earlier settlers could cross on their way to Chrietehurch. After a while he became fm officer in tlse Post Office in Christchurch, and was afterwards appointed Postmaster at Lyttelton. He again took over tlie ferry, and married whdkst at Heat-cote Miss Mills. In 1855 Mi- H. Le Cren removed to Timara and entered into business as a merchant and general agent. Subsequently, about 1864 Mr F. -'■-'* < i ren -Iso went to South Canterbury, and became a partner fit the firm of Cam, Miuiro and Co. On tlie dassolution. of the Partnership he carried on a part of the business, and subsequently sold out. Oft Mr H. Le Cren going Hotm* {Mr F.
