FIRES.
Shortly after tyro o'clock this momingr an outbreak of fire oooitrred at the Criterion Hotel, adjoining the 'I.yttelton« Times" office, in Gloucester street. The Fire Brigade turned oufc prompter witli both engines, but the lire apparently had .already got a strong hold on the building, which was an old one, and by the time the flames were suppressed the place was practically gutted. The only inmates of the hotel at the time were Mr Bumip (the owner and licensee), bis wife, and the barmaid, although two boarders aod two or three employees were sleeping in a detached building" at the rear. Very little was saved, the inmates having only time to escape with a few personal beiongiogs. The fire started in the rear of the building, but the cause of the outbreak is unknown. The building was insured for £500 in the Standard and £500 in the London, Liverpool and Globe, and there was a total insurance of £350 on the furniture, nothing of which was saved.
A fire occurred last night at a quarter to twelve, in the front portion of the shop of 3lr J- Devoy, of Montreal street Nortt Tke damage was slight, owing to the prompt action cm the part of the Fire Brigade.
