MR. McLACHLAN AND FARM LABOURERS.
In his speech at Ashburton, Mr McLachlan is reported to have made use of language expressive of his entire support of the principle of including farm labourers in the Workers* Compensation for Accidents Bill. He recognised that they were so poorly paid as to be unable to make provision against accident; he had protested against their exclusion from the bill; and he had endeavoured, not without success, to reconcile farmers to its provisions. Reference, however to the prosaic pages of "Hansard," vol. 115, p. 75, reveals the chiiling fact that when it was proposed to include farm Jabourers in the bill Mr McLachlan voted against their inclusion." One sober fact like this outweighs a lot of rhetorical claptrap, and we shall be glad to give publicity to any explanation he may have to offer.
