We readr-yTlie money lost in private houses in England at bridge and various gambling games during the last twelve months would have,gone some wav towards paying for the war. One womaii really well known in society, where, indeed| she justly counts among the social powers that bz, »is believed to have lost at bridge upwards of £7000 in the last three months, while another lady, also deservedly popular as a hostess, was forced some time ago to send the contents of her jewel-case for sale to Paris." The habit of betting, too, is said to be steadily on the increase among women, and even "girls hardly out of the schoolroom contract 'debts of honour.'"
