HARNESSING THE WAIMAKARIRI.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE FBXSS. * Sir,—Little birds are whispering that the Chnstcburch scheme to "Harness the Waimakanri," will cost too much. Now*, : sir, will you use your influence to get the Committee to ask the expert to report on the advisability of damming the river at the Gorge, with tire idea of making it a'Canterbury one, ami utilising the whole of tlie water power available. As I understand that electricity is a far cheaper power when generated by water power than steam, there is every chance,of a great advance in manufactories of different kind*. There is a splendid place for a clam, rock bottom and sides, and a railway to assist in making, and the power would be available for nearly the whole of Canterbury.—Yours, etc , CHIPS. July.7th, 1901. . . •
