PUBLIC ABATTOIRS.
PEITITON FROM THE BUTCHERS. A petition was received at last night's meeting of the City Council from the City and Suburban butcher:-, protestuig against the erection of the public abattoirs on the site selected by the City Council at Hornby for the following reasons:—"(i) That in their opinion other sites more suitable have been offered to the Council: (2) that the distance from town will make it almost impossible, and very expensive, to cart tha meat to the shops. This would entail the use of the railway and the experience cf those who have had -to rail meat from slauiditer-houses has been most unsatisfactory' and the rail charges are excessive. Many tradesmen have to draw their supplies more than ones a day in the warm weather; the railway would not suit, and the distance would be prohibitive for carting."
The Special Committee set up reported re abattoir site as follows:—"in accordance with the resolution of the Council the owner of the site selected for the abattoirs was requested to show that it was feasible to connect the property with the Drainage Board sewers. A plan was accordingly prepared which, when submitted to the Drainage Board engineer, was not considered practicable. Mr Dobson was then requested to look into the matter, and he reports that it will be a very expensive work to lay down the proposed sewer owing to the undulating nature of the country through which it has to pass, and suggests that a septic tank would bo preferable and much less expensive." Discussion was adjourned till next Monday.
