ONE FORCE BROKEN TO _ FEAGAIENTS. ' OTHERS IN TROUBLE. (Received January 13th, 4.57 p.m.) LONDON, January 12. Lord Kitclixnar -reports .that H;rtzogs Commando is near Sutherland, and that j Settle is arranging to head him off. The invaders on the Alidlands line aTe broken to fragments, soma returning North. ■ One half of the easternmost Boers are going north, the other half hiding in the mountains to the northwest of Jamestown. , An attack on Machadodorp on Wesdnesday night was repuls-ed at dawn. It is semi-officiall}- announced that the Capetown invaders are avoiding the railway and garrisoned towns. They are continuously on the move, seising horses and foodstuffs. Their mobility enables them to elude pursuit. Kruitzinger finds it easier to push south than retreat. Hertzog's and Brand's vanguard are west of Oalviriia, towards Vandirensdorp, while a portion of ths samecommando has been pursued between Fr_serburg and Sutherland. All the country which tha invaders have quitted is again quiet. Garrisons protect the chief towns. A portion of the mounted forces moved south to protect the southwest. A hundred' Bc-ers have crossed the Orange River towards Barklay 'East. The Cape police and British farmers are repelling them and punishing them. All the towns on the main line between Orange Colony and Pretoria are held strongly, but the Boers show no disposition to attack. Mounted men occupy Piekinerskloof Pass, blocking the in-vad-rs' westward march. Henniker's troops, with others, cover the railway in the vicinity of Alatjesfontein. Tho screen across to Capetown is considered impenetrable.
