SHAKING HANDS WITH THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

The reception of the Governor-General in the Sydney streets on Commonwealth Day was intensely loyal and most enthusiastic. There was an interesting little incident during the procession. A poor looking man in George street declared that he would shake hands .with Lord Hopetoun, and as soon as his Excellency's carriage came near him he made a dash for it, closely followed by two policemen. Lor<s Hopetoun held his hat in his right hand, but noticing the predicament of the poor old stranger he put cut his left hand and grasped the hand extended to him. The old fellow walked beside his Excellency's carriage for some yards, retaining bis hand and smiling gleefully. While in this position he was sacred, but as soon as his Excellency relinquished his grasp the aged loyalist was seized by a policeman anl tossed into the crowd. A SWARM OF BEES IN CHARGE. A peculiar occurrence happened a few days ago at Messrs W. E. Olou&toa and Co.'s store at Blenheim (says the "Express"). As the Langridge waggon was being unloaded of its wool the storeman disturbed a swarm of bees that had settled between the bales unknown to th* -waggoner. Matters thereupon became v_*rv sultry, the bees being exceedingly lively. The horses, eight in number, had to be s-p_*-*_ily unhitched from the waggon and the driver and two 6toren__r_ ignoniinionsly put to flight. The bees held undisprited possession of "the store all the morning until they settled again, when their capture was effected.
