THE RECENT ART UNION PROSECUTION.
In the recent prosecution against the promoters of the Anglican bazaar at Balclutha, for conducting an art union other than of works of art, for which a license had not been granted by the Colonial Secretary, telegraphs our Dunedin correspondent, it transpired .that the first prize was a mounted deer's head. Mr Stratford, S.M., held that the article was a work of nature,*" not of art. though it mij-hi. be partly cla*.* .d among the latter on account of a certain amount of carving on it. But as the offence had been unwittingly committed, and as the net profits of the bazaar amounted to only £4, lie imposed a. merely nominal penalty. x
