Chinese occupied seven lines ol splendid fortiiied entrenchments two hundred yai-ds apart. They retireat-cd steadily, volleying until ejected from the last loie, and "completely routed, they fled towards Pe'kin. The British had two 'hundred lulled and wounded, and the Americans two hundred and fifty. , Tbe iprlsoners say the British poured poison into the trenches, m«uning lyddite fumes from shells.
