LOYAL IRISHMEN AND SCOTCHMEN IN NATAL.
At a meeting of the Natal United Irish Association at Durban, on September 22nd, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—The members of the Natal Irish Association earnestly hope that her Majesty's Government trill soon take steps to speedily terminate the Dresent critical tension in public affairs, which is causing widespread ruin and disaster to all classes in South Africa; and as lovers of liberty and upholders of the civil and political rights of man the members of the Association, representing the majority of Irishmen in Natal, consider that the time has now arrived when an immediate settlement of the difficulty between the Transvaal and Imperial Governments should be effected. The proposal to raise an Irish corps was left to the committee to deal with, as owing to the number of Irishmen already engaged in various quarters, it was felt sure that there would not be sufficient left to form a distinct corps. Mr Trimbie, vice-president, who played an important part in the Johannesburg Reform movement of 1896, has offered 100 guineas to help a few Irishmen to go to the front, and further, two horses, saddles, and bridles if two good Irishmen were selected. The Scottish Association held a meeting the same night, and a unanimous vote was carried in favour of giving all possible assistance to the Imperial Power. Nearly everc man had enrolled ia some branch of the service.
