A CONVINCING TEST OF INSANITY
One frequently hears of curious "teste" of drunkenness given by witnesses at the Police Court, but it remained for a witness last Monday to propound a novel and convincing test of insanity, says the "New Zealand Herald." A man named Dennis Monahan wa» charged with the theft of a quantity of wearing apparel, which he had borrowed from the shops of various drapers in the city. The Bench bad no doubt about tbo guilt of the accused, but the queatiop of his sanity was raised. A witness who was called to give evidence, was asked: "When dad you first suspect that he wae deranged?" Witness: "The Christmas before last, when he told mc he wae going for a seat in Parliament." His Worship remarked, with a smile, that the evidence wm quite sufficient, but Mr Baums, who wae defending the accused, did not venture an opinion, but like Boer Kabbit "lay low and said naffin." The man wee eventually remanded for a week for further examination.
