Another of the band of early colonistj-i Mr James Gapes—passed away early ye?t«* day manning. . Mr Q-apes arrived iiere nsift his wife and family in 'the ship Regifii in 1859. He hod before leaving England take a good deal of interest in the colortiaatiia dl Canterbury, becoming acquainted witii L«i Lyttelton, Messrs Selfe Selfe, FitsGtraH, and others. When Lord Lyttekon «»d Mt Selfe 6elfe visited Canterbury in 1868 tiny called upon Air Gapes, and got from him t good deal of information as <to tire pragnti of the settlement, whioh was used by Qua on their return to London. Mr Gapej est as a member of the City Council for matj years, and was twice elected Mayor, vu,, in 1877 and 1881. Ho was also a Justice of the Peaces which office she resigned <*W ■a ehonb time ago, owing to infirmity, ;H« was eanior trustee of the Ancient. AUCKLAND, October 21. Donald Coutte, aged 73 years, was fond dead in a private bath at Rotorua. Ho was i visitor from Auckland, and he had hm ailing for some tame.
