LAWN TENNIS.
♦ — Fine weather favoured the opening of the season at the Avonside Lawn Tennis Courts yesterday afternoon, when there was a large attendance of members and their friends. Several scratch matches wire played, and at a suitable interval, afternoon tea was handed round. Opportunity was taken of the occasion to present the honorary secretary, Mr Frederick J. Murray, with an E.G.M. racket, with the following inscription engraved on a silver plate:—"To F. J. Murray, from the Avonside Lawn Tennis Club," and also with a beautifully-bound and illuminated address, with which was bound pho- ',-] tographs of the courts, etc The address j j expressed the club's appreciation of Mr Mur- j: ray's services as secretary since the inaugu- j I ration of the club, which he was in- !j strumental in founding. The president, Mr H Alfred Marshall; made the presentation on ' behalf of the club.
