Macmillin, who has just arrived in Dunedin, has come straight from South Africa, where he was residing for same monuis in the interior prior to leaving for New Zealand. We give the following extracts from hds remarks to a Dunedin "Star" interviewer:— : "I arrived in Johannesburg on the 11th of June last, and visited several of the townships of the South African Republic, including" Pretoria. At Pretoria I nad the good Tuck to get an interview with President Krugor. The interview was, in fact, arranged for mc by Mr Mendelsohn, one of the proprietors of the 'Standard and Diggers' newspaper, the Government organ published at Johannesburg. Mr Mendelsohn, who is in high favour with the authorities, gave mc a letter to the President, and, as Mr Mendelsohn happened to be very busy. lie turned mc over to one of the staff, Mr Whintball, who, after driving mc about Pretoria, pulled up at the President's quarters. There were two sentries at toe gates, but as we alighted Mr Whinthall waved theee men aside and we entered and were received by JPaiil .Krjugex without any formality, being granted an interview in the porch. Through the medium of my friend, who actea as interpreter, I had a conversation with Kruger on commonplace subject*. . He eeemed. pleeeed to meet an American, and expressed himself as particularly interested in American machinery, complimentJDg Mr Mendelsohn on his having imported an American machine for printing his newspaper.
