The Houte met at 2.30 p.m. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Notice vu given to ask for leave of ab•ence for three weeks for Mr Wright, on account of illness. - PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE. . Mr TANNER. Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, brought under the notice of the Home a matter in which the Committee wished a direction. The Committee wished lor certain returns regarding • number of temporary clerks employed in the Government service, which the ColociiM Secretary refused, na not being wkhin the order of reference, holding that such return could only be furnished upon the order of the House. The report of the Committee on the subject wm read. The PREMIER contended that the order of «etereace did «not empower the Committee to older returns. A majority on the ComSHttae was of the same opinion. The matter wm now left open for the House to deal with, as an amendment to the motion that the report be agreed to. Mr ALLEN moved that in order to remove doubts •* to the power of the Public Accounts Committee, <he House affirms that the Public Accounts Committee has power to call for persons, papers, and records. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 o'clock adjournment.
