In the Kaiapoi Friendly Societies' card tournament, on Thursday, the Fire Brigade won from the Oddfellows, Foresters from the Caledonians,, and Druids from the Sons of Temperance. A large and representative gathering of j -Masons and their friends was held° on j Thursday evening in Hpbbs's Assembly Rooms, the occasion being a social and dance given by the Conyers Masonic Lodge, No. 1916, E.C. R.W. Bro. R. D. Thomas, District Grand Master, and other D.G. offi-i cers, and the Masters of most of the,local lodges were present. The dances were interspersed with, songs given by the" ladies, visitors, and members of tho lodge. Bro. S. Forsyth was M.C.. Bro. MinChinton was the caterer. At the last meeting of the . St. Albans Musical and Literary _ Society, the programme comprised original items as follows: —Chairman's address, Mr F. H." Salter; songs, Mrs Hindlc, Miss Lee, and Mr Simpson; dialogues and charades, by members, and a mock political met-ting by Mr C. E. Salter.

The Geraldine Masonic ball took place on Thursday night in the Oddfellows' Hall, and.' was a great success. Tlie attendance was excellent despite bad weatlter. The hall was tastefully decorated, and the Masonic Hall adjoining was used as the supper room. Mr J. Bryant was the caterer. The music wjs supplied by Messrs Murray- and Heap. During the evening Mrs Stubbs played a polo, and Mr.B. R. Macdonald gave a reciia--lion.

The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U., Kaiapo-i, was held on Wednesday. A resolution was passed to be sent to Mr" Moore, M.H.R., asking him to support the Local Option Scrutineers Bill, also a Bill tx» be introduced. , by. Mr JKxlly, M.H.R., called the "Young Persons Protection Bill," and.strongly urging members to use all their influence to have both Bills passed this session. Arrangements were made •in regard to the approaching visit ot Mrs Harrison Lee.

A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Temperanoe brass band for the Linwood district was held on Tuesday evening, when thirteen gave in their names as members. Messrs R. Smi'h, J. Stratford, F. and T. Ranford, J. Ellis, and E. Wealleans were appointed a committee, and Mr E. An application having been' i received for a permit to build an iron shop in High street, a committee was appointed to cdusides the whole question of building within the.inner area. A quantity'of routine business was transacted. At a special meeting of the Council the balance-sheet, audited, was received.

There was a public installation on Monday night in connection with the Pioneer Lodge of Druids. The installation was conducted by D.P. Bro. Davison. There was a good attendanae of visitors. A concert and dance followed. During the evening presentations were made ov D.G.P. T-hos, Smith of D.P. Diplomas to Bros. Tulley, Rose and A. Smith, and P.A, Diploma to Bro. Neate. The Sydenham Methodist" Band of Hope Society met on Monday. An excellent programme of songs, dueti, trios, quartettes, glees, recitations, dialogues and instrumental music was given by the Woolston Band ofHope Society. The Tui Tapu Band of, Hope met on Sunday afternoon, Mr J. \V. Miller occupying the chair. The piogi*a.mui&. co-sisted of hymns, under the leader-hip of Mr J. F. WaUoii, duct by Misses Suckling and Watson, songs by Misses Suckling, Peryman and Messrs W. K. Wateon and L. Pegler,' recitations by Ada Hellewell and William Peryman, and readings "by Miss Peryman and Mr T. 0. Moigan. The quarterly social in connection with tlie Woolsk-n "Wedeyan Church wa3 held in the Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The Rev; T. W. Newbold was in, the chair, and there was a good attendance. * Short addresses wore given on. behalf of the various departments of the Church by members, and songs were sung by IvULsses, Ellison, Cokcr, Marquefc, and Mr Spensley, * pianoforte dust by Miss Daisy Marquet and Mr D. McHarg, and a vioun solo by Mr H. Spensley. Mr D. McHarg played the accompaniments. Re-freshmen-ts were handed round, and a very enjoyable meeting was brought to a close by singing the Doxulogy. Quartettes were also given by Mr and Mrs Martin, Miss Trerise, and Mr Peters.

On Wednesday evening the annual Home Mission soiree "was held in Trinity Congregational provisions for which werQ generously supplied by the ladies of Lcnwood arid Trini-ty Churches. , Tea was by a lecture on "Tennyson," delivered by the Rev. Geo. Burgess, F.R.A.S., of Timaru, which was inuoh appreciated. Songs from tihe poet's works were sung by Messrs G. WoodTiam and'H. Johnson.
