NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

An entertainment will be given to-night in St. Luke's Schoolroom in aid of the Sunday school treat. Two operettas, "Aii Baba" and " Abou Hassan," will be performed on the occasion.

The annual meeting of the Riccarton Amateur Swimming Club will be held at the church schoolroom, Upper Riccarton, on Monday next, at 7.30 p.m. The annual musical and recitation competition connected with the Sons and Daughters of Temperance, Kaiapoi, takes place this evening. A large number of entries have been received.

The annual meeting of the West Coast Chinese Mission in connection with the Canterbury Christian Endeavour Union takes place to-night in the St. Asaph street Methodist Church. Addresses will be given by the Revs. Dr. Erwin and Gow and Miss Voak, the latter of whom has recently returned from China on furlough. A collection will be made at the close in aid of the mission.

The annual meeting of the East Christchurch Swimming Club will take place at the main school, Gloucester street, tomorrow evening at eight o'clock. The, meeting ot the delegates of the various rowing clubs to confer re the question of the condition of the river Avon and the steps to be adopted to obtain an improvement, will take place to-night at eight o'clock at the Union Rowing Club's Boathouse.

The weather promises well for the Hill Climbing Competition to-day, and there ought to be a very large attendance. With a frequent tram service, almost to the spot, no doubt many will take the opportunity <of spending the half-holiday on the hills. Mrs Cole, who went" to considerable expense and trouble on Thursday last providing afternoon tea, which, of course, was all wasted, has again most generously offered to dispense tea. Messrs Carl and Fox also provide light refreshment. All arrangements are now completed, and a good day's sport is anticipated. The procession leaves <the..square at 2 p.m. The owners of the John Anderson have arranged a party for trawl fishing next week, and if the weather is at all propitious, a large catch is anticipated. The chorus of Natives' Association Operatic Society, which is to produce the opera "Dorothy" in February next, numbers some sixty members. Rehearsals will be commenced next month. Mr TJaos. Garrard is assisting the committee ia the work.
