THE WEEKLY PRESS.
Among the illustrations in this week's "Weekly Press" are snapshots of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club's steeplechase, views of Akaroa, market day at Rangiora, highly artistic photographic study, a portrait of Miss Cordner, Rakaia, the late Lady Halle, the fatal mining accident in Hokitika, and campaigning in Egypt, map, portraits, and engraving of the Egyptian medal and star. The last named accompany an interview which "Bullseye" has had with Trooper Shepherd, who was through the Egyptian campaign from Suakin to Tel el Kebir. There are some good short stories and a new contribution upon Professor Morris's Austral English. In the "Fanner" we note an. instructive article upon agricultural education in America.
THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IN SWITZERLAND. Taking in the tourist (we use the phrase without any "arriere pensee") is the most important of Swiss industries (says the "Daily News"). It is calculated that the gross receipts for a year amount to £4,600,000 —a sum which exceeds by £1,400,000 the Budget revenue of the Confederation. The rate of profit is of course variable, but it is believed that the interest on the capital invested in the industry averages 6 per cent. —i — ♦ - AN EXIRAORDINARY ADVERTISEMENT. A correspondent obligingly forwards mc, says "Oriel" in the "Argus, a clipping from a country newspaper, which supplies a new model of exactitude in obituary notices. It runs as follows:—"Death.—Smit.—On die 28th inst., Amy Jane Mary Smit, eldest daughter of John and William Smit, aged 1 day 2i hours. The bereaved and heart"broken parents beg to tender their hearty thanks to Dr. Jones for his unremitting attention during the illness of the deceased, and for the moderate brevity of his bill. Also to 3frs Williams for the loan of clean sheets, to Mr Wilson for running for the doctor, and to Mr Robinson for recommending mustard plaster."
