ASHBURTON.

The fortnightly meeting of this Council wae held on Monday, when all the councillors, except Cr. Thomas, were present. The Mayor repented that the overdraft amounted to £1846, and steps would have to be taken to reduce it. The new councillors, Messrs Hamner, Pauling and Maynard, were;welcomed by the Mayor. A vote of thanks to the Premier and to the Hon. W. C. Walker passed for their services in ridding th*e Water Supply Bill of certain clauses which the Council deemed objectionable. The following committees for the ensuing year were elected :—Works —Crs. Scaly, Orr, Collins, Davis and Thomas ; Reserves—Crs. Collins, Maynard, Pauling, Scaly and Hanmer ; Lighting, Crs. Collins, Orr, Davis, Thomas and Hanmer; By-laws—Crs. Thomas, Scaly, Maynard, Paul and Collins ; Fire Brigade—Crs. Pauling, Maynard; Paul and Collins; Finance— Crs. Orr, Collins and Thomas; Library— Cre. Paul, Hanmer, Collins, Thomas and Pauling. Ie was decided to charge ratepayers over six months in arrear with their rates a fine of 10 per cent., and to sue for the amount. The Council went into committee on the water supply question, and afterwards sat as a Domain Board, when the Works Committee was appointed the Domain Committee for the year. I
