NEW ZEALANDERS AT HOME.

[Fj?.OJ[ QvK OWK CORRESrONDKXT] LONDON, August 12. Miss Edith If. Cooke, of Christchurch, who has successfully passed two of her examinations in the massage treatment, went up for hei third and final one op Monday last, the result of which will be made known in a few days' time. At the end of next week Miss Cooke hat. arranged to leave London to: spend a short time in fcSwitzerlhnd and France, returning ultimately here bet ore taking her final departure for New Zealand.

it is always gratifying to notice how many New Zealanders bun; appear "to make their mark ,, when, they leave theii native colony and go lorth into the widei world, ibis reflection has been once more suggested by an interview with Air iv. J. Ureenstreet, wiiose name will be rememuered in .New Zealand, although it is now some years since he left that country. Mr Ureenstreet has just arrived in .London from the Xransvaal, where he holds the important appointment ot manager of what aie practically the Government refrigerating stores for that .Republic. JJuring a chat wit" Air Greenstreet yesterday, lie mentioned that alter leaving New Zealand lie settled for some time in SSyjdney, where he was manager oi some reuigeratnig stores, .nearly last year he paid a visit to the Argentine to ascertain for himself what progress the production and exportation of irozeu meat, was making there, and to see wnether the latest Argentine developments in the way oX Ireezuig works and cold stores woum aflord any suggestions or improvements to Australia aua j>iew z,ealaua. He found, however, that mere was nothing to be learned in the South American State, die works being ol a satisfactory character, but hardly so thorougmy up io date as ths latest constructed vi New Zealand and Australia. He then went to iSoutn Airica, and travelled from Capetown to Pretoria, where he had an. interview with President Kruger, ■who impressed him as a man of great astuteness and of very strong and masterful character. The iact of Shis being a "New Zealandei" and not an ".bngiismnan" was distinctly in. his favour in the Transvaal. After various interviews and negotiations President Kruger decided to recommend the Volksraad te vote ±!&5,000 toward the establishment of cold stores and refrigerating works. Their . construction was. taken in hand by a private company contributing and the Government vote ol £85,000 being cairied in the Volksraad through the influence of President Ivruger, works have been established, and Mr Greenstreet is the manager. He has come to London with two of the Directors for the purpose of-inviting tenders for the refrigerating machinery witn all the latest improvements. .Three cold stares will be erected. One each at Pretoria and Johannesburg, the third eithei at Durban or Delagoa Bay, the latter, although of course not 'in the Transvaal territory, being the most convenient port of entry, as the cost of convtyance by the long overland journey from Capetown to Pretoria would prob.vbly prove prohibitive. Mi- Grecnstreev remarucd Jo mc that the more he sees of other countries in the world, the more he is impressed with the enorfhous advantages in respect of climate and soil and pasture wfliich New Zealand enjoys as compared with other places. Mr Greenstreet expects to leave on his return to South Africa towards the end of next month. Bather a bad accident Befell Mrs Gammack, of Christchurch, while travelling in Ayrshire. She was thrown out of a trap in which she was driving, and sustained a shock. From this, ihowever, Mrs Gammack has completely recovered, and purposes leaving for New Zealand via San Francisco. Mr Joseph Gould is in Sutherlandshire for the shooting; Mr Joseph Lewis and Miss Lewis, of Geraldine, arrived in town on Saturday last.
