LONDON, September 18; ..* The initial heats for the competition for the "Sportsman" Challenge Cup were rowed yesterday. - The contestants in the first' heat were Wray and Barry. The Australian led from the start, and headed Barry by a length as the Thames Club shed was passed, which Was increased to two lengths when they reached the concrete steps. At the mile post Barry wasjbwo and a half lengths in the rear. At* this point Wray faltered slightly but recovered, and held the lead until'choppy water was encountered. Then Barry lessened the gap, and eventually won a close contest by a short half length. Time, 7min 25sec.

In the second heat Bubear and Towns competed. Bubear dispensed with the services of a pilot boat. Towns soon took the lead, and passed Hammersmith, bridge three lengths ahead of Bubear, who fouled a hulk, but gamely spurted, and at Barnes was Towns then again drew out clear, and* finished virtually alone, Bubear stopping exhausted. Time, Bmin.
