ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

An inquest on the body of the late' Mr Edwin Barry, who died suddenly on.Sunday, was held at-Kaiapoi on Monday by Mr H. W. Bishop, Coroner, and a jury of which Mr W. Thurlow was chosen foreman, W. Cannon, a sailor, gave evidence that he left deceased on Saturday night at 10.30., He had been com-, plaining of a pain in his chest, and drank some hot water. They were talking about his going back to England. J. Malay stated, that he had lived with deceased for- about ten years in. a lean-to at the pa. Witness was aroused at 2 a.m., and found deceased dying, and called assistance. Deceased had suffered from indigestion. -J. Jiidson - stated that he had known deceased fifteen years as a man who kept accounts for hint, , and believed that he might have had sojme ' property. W. Uru stated that he visited England, as sergeant of the Maori contingent ; he took a letter of introduction to deceased's cousin, Mr Jas. Barry, barrister, London. Dr. H. Compton-Parsons,' who had made the post mortem, said that death was due to failure of the heart's action, otherwise all the organs of the body were healthy. The jury's verdict was "Death from fatty degeneration of the heart." - Tlie Maoris of St. .Stephen's obtained permission to conduct the funeral and bury the body. Subsequently friends of the deceased in Christchurch were discovered, and under- , took the expenses of the interment; ' *
