JUBILEE EXHIBITION IN 1900.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. . Sir,—Some time back I ventured ths opinion in your columns that it would be ■ highly desirable that the structure for ths exhibition should be 61 a permanent charac. ter, and light and tasteful in design, i would again earnestly call tlie attention of ths various authorities to this matter. A light structure, chiefly of glass and iron, that could at all time's be used for exhibitions and large public gatherings, and that would - afford at other times a kind of winter garden,, with ferneries and tropical plants,' dec.,; would, I venture to say, fulfil all require*, menfs and prove an ornament as well. Tha kind of structure I mean is a sort of miniature Crystal Palace. If the varicufs authorities, such as the City Council, Domain Board, Agricultural Associations, &c, [Would combine with the Exhibition Executive, a . building might be erecteb. that would he of great public utility. The process of erecting buildings to be pulled down again ir wasteful, and I think foolish. The Agricultural Hall in Dunedin is simply a large rown, with no pretensions to beauty, and when the late exhibition was being held it was necessary to add to it by putting up a row of hideous lean-to iron structures, the sooner nulled down the better.

As to site, I should think that either Cranmer or Latimer squares would be suitable, v if there are not complications or insurmount* able objections in the way. In a town. oi.. such ample space as .Christchurch, there should be no difficulty ; ana , it might be well ' to purchase a site in the immediate suburbs for the purpose, if any difficulties are in the way of procuring a Bite for permanent buildings in the squares oi (he park. Those of your readers wiio are acquainted with the winter gardens at Bournemouth will know the kind ot structure I refer to.. If I mistake not, it was erected by the muni- ■ cipality and was inexpensive and orna- • mental. " ' . ' As a building stioh as I indicate would serve admirably foi shows of all kinds/-, flower, poultry, dog and cycle shows, and orchestral ooncerts, &c, the mote centra}, it is the better, as- the receipts would be much larger than it more distant.—Yours, &c., . . - « permanent; / 1-—* s , "
