DRAINAGE BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Drainage Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs J. Deans (chairman), J. Down, W. E. Samuels, R. M. Taylor, C. Burgess, R. Hill Fisher and C. Palairet. The Secretary and Treasurer reported :— Amount of rates received from noon July 30th to noon August 27th, £507 lis Id; amount received from other sources, £6710 a 4d ; expenditure, £415 7s 5d ; amount of 1896 rate outstanding, £23 15s ; amount of 1897 rate outstanding, £138 18s lld; amount of 1897 rate collected, £19,195 2s 2d ; amount of 1898 rate colleoted, £1778 9a 9d. debiji.'ibalajice,.£63Bß.. ..- .... ■.. Four ratepayers residing near the Styx waited on the Board and asked that some improvement should be. made to .fuller's drain. The question was referred to the Works Committee to act. ..;... Mr R. W. England, jun., interviewed the Board and presented a request from several residents of the Papanui road for the sanction of the Board to their continuing the sewer from St. Albans • lane through the Springfield estate, the residents to bear the co3t and the sewer to be constructed according to the approval of the Board. The Board agreed to the request. The Engineer reported that if three or four houses in Manchester street which were still draining into St Luke's creelwere connected there would be absolutely no pollution of the creek down to Salisbury street. He, however, did not know it the Board had power to take action. The work of clearing the Heathcote river below Radley bridge had been completed at a cost of £24 lis 9d. It was decided to draw the attention of the City Council to the first clause. The report was adopted. " An account was received from the City Council for £20 9s lOd, repairs, &c, to drains in Peterborough street and River road (Richmond). Mr Taylor moved that the Board could recognise no responsibility in the matter, which was agreed to. The Linwood Borough Council complained of the continued existence of the nuisance arising from the gullies in Ferry road, and asserting tbe necessity of mitigating the nuisance in the interests of public health. The engineer reported that an appaient remedy had been provided, and the question was deferred. The Brighton Council wrote that £7 9s 9d as rates on empty houses had not beeA collected. Application was made for the payment of commission at the rate of 5 per cent. It was decided to pay the Council 3J per, cent, commission, and in future the arrangement to obtain as existed with other similar local bodies. The Spreydon Road Board wrote holding the Board responsible for bridges over the drain in Selwyn street, Selwyn street and Colombo street, Simeon street, Wilderness road, Milton street, Leitch and Dunn streets. The Board decided to reply that only two of the bridges were under its control. ' ' ' Mr F. M. Warren was, subject to the approval of the engineer, granted permission to erect a water-wheel in the creek bounding his property, Clyde road. An application from Mr W. Webb, for permission to put a water-wheel in the Wairarapa stream, Fendalton, was deferred for inspection and report. The Engineer reported that the AnditorGeneral had re-arranged and altered the Board's balance-sheet, which meant that the Board would have now two sets of accounts to keep. It was decided to write to the Department on the subject. The Board then adjourned.
