'A characteristic incident of the late Mi* f-ladstone was related on Sunday evening by &c Rev. P. W. Fairclough, who preached m the Wesleyan Church at Kaiapoi. A sick -rowing-sweeper, he said, on being visited by a minister was informed that a gentleman whom ho had often met and spoken to on bis crossing had been to read and offer comfort to him of a substantial kind. From enquiries made it was discovered that the workman's visitor was Mr Gladstone, who had enquired of the strange man on the crossing j» to the absence of the sick man and his whereabouts, and had accordingly wught the poor sweeper out.
