THE NEW RAILWAY EXPERT.
Mr A. H. Johnson, tho expert just appointed by the Railway Department, is not only a signal engineer, but an electrician, competent to give an opinion on electrical signalling, a separate and distinct service. He has entered upon his duties, and has been attached to the office of the Chief Engineer for Working Railways, and his staff will form a branch of that office. It has become patent of late to even non-experts (says the "New Zealand Times") that the present signalling apparatus in connection with our railways is not quite what it should be. and it is a "matter of congraulation that the innovations outlined will reduce risks to a minimum. The block system is intended to prevent rear end or face to face collisions on the ordinary traffic lines, and interlocking points and signals render impossible conflicting movements at junctions and yards. There are only five or six signal cabins in use at the principal yards in the colony at the present time. These will be fitted up with the most modern apparatus, and more cabins erected and similarly furnished from time to time. An extensive set of plans anal present being prepared, and probably the first steps towards the installation of the new system will be made in the Wellington yards.
