(*"B—SS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, May 21. The D. J.C. May Meeting commenced today. Rain fell in tbe morning and, though the weather cleared up, a drizzling mist set in in the afternoon, so that, with the increasing darkness and mist, the horses in the last two races were scarcely discernible. The course was soft on the surface and the going heavy. The attendance was not up to the mark. The racing was on the whole interesting. Belmont was taken to the front, with Supplejack second and Stanley third. A bad jump by Belmont brought him into third ' place at the back of the course, but ho recovered his position and the field was in a cluster with the exception of Kaiti at the bottom of the course. Supplejack, knocking down the hurdle, led into the straight, with Stanley second and Belmont third. Rounding the turn, Belmont compounded, while Kaiti did not appear able to make up any of his lost ground. Supplejack, though again knocking down a hurdle, was not troubled, and won in a canter by three lengths, Belmont a bad third. Time, 4min 21sec. Dividends—lnside £3 2s, outside (10s tickets) £2 ss. Fulmen was at once taken to the front, and remained there to the end. Wolfs Crag was second at the windmill, with Glenore and Wimbledon next, the rest tailing off. Along the back stretch Wimbledon took second place, but could never get up to Fulmen, who won by slightly over a length, Glenore, who came with a late run, just beating Wimbledon for second money on the post. Sequin and Starshot were quickest to move, while Monte Carlo was caught in the tapes. Starshot being steadied, Sequin went on in front ,until nearing the stand, where Black and Red joined her. Passing the stand Pitch and Toss Was just in front of Sequin, and Double Event took third position, Black and Red next, and Starshot • last. There was some change of places among the unplaced division in* the next half-mile, and Sequin again took charge, and commenced to draw away, but approaching the home turn Starshot commenced to move up. Sequin still led in the straight, with Double Event second, *and Starshot third. With., a well-timed run Starshot disposed of Double Event, and just caught and beat Sequin on the post by a head, Double Event two lengths away. Pitch and Toss was fourth, Black and Red fifth, and Monte Carlo last. Time, 2min 46§sec. Dividends, £2 lis, 10s tickets £13s. WINTER WELTER HANDICAP, of 75 soys; second 5 soys from the stake. Once heads were turned for home Vandyke caught Barmby, and coming on won by over two lengths, the same distance separating second and third. The Orphan, St. Ouida, and P.P.C. finished in that order. A protest was entered on the ground that Rae, the rider of the winner, did not draw the weight. In the evening the protest was considered aud dismissed. At the meeting of the Stewards in the evening to consider the protest against Arline in the Tradesmen's Handicap, it Was resolved— _-• That as the clerk of the scales states that the rider of Arline weighed in correctly, and he declared it was so, which was corroborated by several witnesses, the, Stewards must dismiss the protest. They -wish, however, to express their strong disapprobation that Mr Fleming, as the owner of Arline and a steward of long experience, should have committed the grave impropriety of touching the scales."
