MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.
A eribbnf'e and euchre malch was played evening between (MtlMlowa ; IVeUcra at Kaiapoi, the former win- „„,., in both instances with a total of 31 catiies, Foresters 29. The children who assisted at the recent performances of the c.-mtsta '-Lily Bell" at" Kaiapoi, were entertained at a social jratfieririL' in the Orange Hall yesterday evening Tea was provided by lady members of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. A concert wes given on Thursday evening in aid of the Rangiora Cricket Club funds in the Oddfellows' Hall of that town. There was a gnod attendance. The vocalists were Misses M<ir and Gray, Messrs W. A. Day and A. Millar. A Circassian dance by Misses Wilder, recitations by Messrs G. P. Williams and Marciel, a laughable farce, " iio. 1 Rouiftl the Corner," in which the characters were taken by Messrs F. H. Brittan and G. Williams, and an exhibition of the gramaphone by Air Charlewood, completed an interesting programme. The usual meeting of the Societe Francaise was held last night at Girton College. Mr F. O. Hall occupied the chair. Miss Freeman gave a reading, as also did Miss Haskins and M. Malaquin. Messrs Zeller and Hull gave addresses. One new member was proposed. A committee meeting of the Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club was held on Wednesday night. The treasurer's statement showed the club to have a credit balance at the end of the season. It was unanimously decided to hold the usual smoke concert and presentation of prizes next Friday uight. The Kaiapoi Caledonian Society held a meeting at the Mandeville Hotel on Thursday evening, at which Mr A. T. Clark, as secretary, and Mr J. Forrest, as treasurer, were re-elected.
At the weekly meeting of the Durham Btieet Wealeyan Christian Endeavour Society last night, a resolution was unanimously agreed to, heartily thanking MrT. E. Taylor "for his earnest, untiring, and self-sacrificing effort to further the glorious moral cause of temperance." At the Avoneide winter entertainment last night the locally written extravaganza of " The Sleeping Beauty" wae given very successfully, the characters being filled by members of the Children's Ministering League. At the Kaiapoi Mutual Improvement Society's meeting on Thunday there was a large attendance to hear the competitions eeut in :—For the best examples of child wit, Mrs C. E. Blackwell; quotation on dress, Mrs J. P. Armitage; epigram on the bicycle, Mr J. H. Blackwell; most thrilling adventure, Mr W. A. Fairclough ; acrostic on Cuba, Mr A. Blakeley ; conundrums on the war, Mrs J. P. Armitage. There were eighty-eight contributions, n.nd the enter* tainment was an excellent one. The Rev. P. W. Fairclough presided. There was a discussion on the merits of some of the compositions. The next meeting will be devoted to a lecture on "Fairy Tales" by the President. The 800ial of the Papjumi quadrille assembly waa held on Thursday evening in the Papanui Town Hall. Mrs W. Jaokson acted as chaperone, and songs were contributed during the evening by Messrs L. Pegler and H. V. Pattrick, Miss Ritchie playing the accompaniments very artistioalfy. Messrs G. Bailey and G. Homer, as pianist and M.C. respectively, carried out their duties to the satisfaction of all present. The Kaiapoi Presbyterian Church anniversary was celebrated on Thursday evening by a soiree, at whioh tables were presided ut by Misses McGregor, Ross (2), Mcßone, Heney and Young. Addresses were given by Reve. W. J. Gow, A. Doull, and J. M. Simpson. The choir gave several anthems, and songs were rendered by Misses M. and J. Young, Mcßorie and Ellen.
