MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

A pleasant gathering was held at the Caledonian Hotel, St. Albans, on Wednesday evening, when the employees at Ward and Co.'s brewery met the members of the St. Albana Caledonian Club. During the evening a oribbage and euchre match was played, resulting in a win for the Caledonians by eight games. Mr Spedding provided an excellent supper, at which a number of songs were contributed and the toasts of the rival teams, " Ward and C 0.," "Our Host," and "The Chairman" duly honoured. It was decided to hold a return gathering next mtfiith. s The Richmond Amateur Swimming Club held its fifth annual concert in the Richmond Methodist Schoolroom last evening. There was an excellent attendance. Songs were given by Misses Hiorns, Buchanan aad Hardey and Messrs A. F. Young, A. Brabner and J. Butterfield; recitation by Mr W. A. Hall, a pianoforte duet by Miss Hall and Mrs Edgar, pianoforte solo" by Miss Black, instrumental selection by Mr E. J. Painter's mandolin and guitar band, and gramaphone selection by Professor Boulten. Miss Black acted as accompanist. Mr T. Bassett (president of the club), assisted by Mrs Bassett, then presented the prizes won during the season. Mr Anmtage, the captain of the club, presented Mr Bassett with a photo of the committee as a souvenir of his interest in the club. Mr Jack Northey was also presented with a Layman boat, a special prize presented by Mr W. Recce to the member scoring the largest number of points in club competitions throughout the season. The annual general meeting of the Stanmore Band was held last evening in the band room. The balance sheet for the year showed receipts £185 9s 10d and the expenditure £184 4s 3£d, leaving a credit balance of £1 5s 6Jd. The balance sheet was adopted as read. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Conductor, Mr R. Trist Searell; band sergeant, Mr J. Foley ; corporal, Mr Chas. Dann ; lance-corporal, Mr A. Martin; secretary, Mr J. Cragg (reelected) ; treasurer, Mr J. Gresham (reelected) ; custodian, Mr Chas. ' Dunn ; committee, Messrs F. Osborne, H. L. Oakes, J. Foley, C. Dunn aud A. Alartin ; president, Mr W. P. Cowlishaw (re elected); vice-presidents, Messrs R. C. Bishop, Flesher, Wynn-Williams, Loughrey, Thompson, Shaw and Mrs Toomer; auditors, Messrs Rowe and Oakes. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Chas. Dunn for his valuable services in coaching young members. Songs were sung by Messrs Foley, Cragg, Gresham and others. The fortnightly meeting of St. Albana Literary Society was held on Tuesday evening. The editor, Miss Smith, read the Journal, and the articles were freely discussed. A recent visitor to England contributed a paper, an account of an excursion to the Cumberland Lakes. Mesdames Henley and Hewitt sang a duet, and Miss E. Chaplin a solo, Miss £. Smith presiding at the piano. At the usual meeting of the St. Michael's Temperance Society on Wednesday evening the programme consisted of recitation*, song 3, a dialogue, and an addrese on temperance by the chairman, the Rev. A. W. Averill.

The annual meeting of the shareholders in the Industrial Building Society was held last night at the office, Worcester street. Mr H. D. Pine, chairman of directors, presided. The report of the directors stated that in the balance-sheet the profit and loss account, though decreased from £827 7s 2d to £805 7s 10d, a sum equal to £21 19s 4d, for the year, the division between the present members would equal £7 5s per share, an advance of 15s 9d per share on last year's results. The profit and lose account showed the credit balance of £805 7s 10d. The total amount of loans advanced had been £13,800. The retiring directors, Messrs H. D. Pine, S. R Wathewand J. A. Clarke were being the only ones nominated. f

A general committee meeting of the United Friendly Societies , Benevolent Fund was held last night;, when there was a good attendance. All the arrangement? for the concert ia aid of the fund, which will be held on Tuesday night, at the Choral Hall, were made. It was announced that a very attractive programme had been prepared of vocal and instrumental items, which would be carried out under the directorship of Mr A. J. Merton. It was reeolved to open the plan of the reserved seats on Saturday at Messrs Miloer and Thompson's. The usual meeting of the Socialist Church was held last evening. Mr J. Knott gave an addresi advocating the founding of a Communistic settlement, to serve as an object lesson for the State. A resolution was passed expressing pleasure at the formation of a social union in the Anglican Church.
