THE TYPE-SETTING MACHINE.

(PBK3S ASSOCIATION- TELEGRAM.)

AUCKLAND, May 9,

At a special meeting of the Auckland Typographical Association the question of assisting compositors thrown out of work through the introduction of the linotype machine was discussed. A reply was read from W. Hall-Jones in reference to the extra compositors taken on at the Government Printing Office during the session of Parliament, stating he hod no intention of departing from the practice in vogue during the past five or six years, viz., that of taking a few compositors from each provincial centre, thus dividing the work as equitably as possible. A letter was read from the Premier also in regard to assisting the unemployed compositors by offering suitable sections of land on easy terms, in districts where the men could pat in part pf their time at road making or other work. The Premier expressed pleasure that the men who were being thrown out of work through no fault of their own were meeting their altered condition so bravely, and stated that both the Minister of Lands and himself would render the men all the assistance in their power. Matters in connection with the working of the linotype machines were also dealt with, and the Board was authorised to submit several questions to the firms interested for settlement. It was also resolved to record with approval the action of the New Zealand Herald proprietors in making a gratuity of £1 for each year of service to each of the men who had been displaced by the introduction of the linotype machines.
