THE M.H.R. FOR SELWYN.

TO THE KDITOR OF THE PRESS.

Sir,—lt is not often I take the trouble to read letters published in the newspapers above the signature of "John Jebson," as I have had too often the opportunity of hearing viva voee that immaculate expounding wisdom.

It was only the other evening, at a public meeting held in this locality, I heard that worthy characterise in no polite terms a gentleman for having made a statemenc which "John Jebson" said "was only half the truth." Now, in the name of all that's fair and square, why does "John Jebeon" tell only half the truth in reference to his remarks in his letter of this morning's Press, reflecting upon the action of the member for Selwyn advocating the expenditure of a few pounds in making a small loop line to connect the Canterbury Colliery with the main line. " Jonn Jebson" knows full well that the owners of this important industry have guaranteed to pay the interest on tote outlay for this work, and moreover he also knows the benefit to be derived by the public in having greater facilities, enabling the native coal to be placed upon the market at the lowest cost, leaving out the extra number of miners able to find employment in this colliery. I am quite cure, sir, you will agree with mc that Mr Wason has during the past session done good work for his constituency, and ho, as a politician, has not only "appeared clean," but is " clean." The electors of Selwyn are well pleased in their choice. 1 daresay had "John Jebson" been mstatuquo in reference to these coal mines, he would <have been the first to pat Mr Wason on the shoulder.— Yours, Ac,

Malvkbn.

May 7th.
