CHEVIOT.
The Cheviot C6uoty Council met at the Laud Office, M'Keuzie, ou May 28bh. Present —The Chairman (Mc J. Gibaon), and Messrs Rutherford, Forbes, timich and Gell. Twenty-two applications for the position of Foremau of Worke were read. It was resolved uuammously that Mr D. Fraser be appointed Foreman oi Works for twelve months from the Ist June, 1896 j a mouth's notice on. either side to terminate the engagement. Messrs Wells aud Butt'e teuilec for- quarrying and breaking metal at 'it 8d per cuoic yard «ai accepted ; as were Mr Peek's tender for cnlverts ii\ Miller sireec, £278 6i, and Mi-P. Leahy's tea tier for the formation of Miller etreet, at £4. The!. Chairmau and Cr. Forbes were authorised to deal with the letting of Homeview'Cemetery reserve. It was moved by xir Forbes, and seconded by! Mr Rutherford, "That a general rate be made apd levied pursuant "to seccion t ?148 " of the Couu'ies Act, 1888, ][ of |d in the £, on all rateable property now appearing.ou the valuation rolls for the several ridings within the county of Cheviot. Such rate shall be for the period commencing on the Ist day of April, 1896, and ending on the 31st day of Match, 1897, and payable in one sum at the. Council office on <Monday, the Ist of June, 1896, between the hours of 11 a.m. aud 3 p.m." Carried. Ie was resolved that Clarkson aud Petherau have three daye' work bu the roads per week guaranteed at 6s per day, and casual labour u n the boat at Iβ per hour. -Mr Sinclair waa directed to see Mr Hughes and ask him if he ia willing to ...take the situation offered to him oh terms proposed or not. Hands ab the pott are to commence their service undee the County Council bu the Ist of June, 1896. It was resolved that the charges for landing machinery or furniture be 4s 6d pet ton, inclusive charge. The Clerk was inetructed to write to the Hon. the Minister of Lands.asking him to put down moorings at the port for saiiiug vessels, the Government having promised to do so; also to ask Mr Marobant why it is that Mr Sinclair pays money received by him for dues and charges at the port to the Government now that the port service is in the hands of the County Council, and Mr Sinclair in their service ; also to see Mr Sinclair and prepare a revised list of port dues ready for next general meeting. It was resolved that the charge for using the surf boat by passengers going out or coming ashore ba Iβ per head from let of June, 1896. Leave to open monthly accounts at the port was granted to Meesrs B. C. Smith, J. luglesby, and G. VV. Forbei.
