THE DRINKSELLER'S LITANY."
TO THE EDITOR OF TUB PRESS. Sib, — Although the ' Prohibitionist is edited by a Weeleyan minister, its method of dealing with the subject is often the cause of much pain to a large number of Wesleyans, who, while in sympathy with the end it has in view, viz., removing the cause of so much misery, and after admitting that strong measures are needed, yet cannot endorse all that is written. While speaking to a worthy member of the Church of England and expressing my sorrow that their beautiful Litany had been stained by so miserable a parody, to.my, relief be said he had never heard of it, and did not even know that there was such a paper called Prohibitionist. Perhaps it would nave been better to have allowed it to pass quietly and not given it so much publicity as has been' done in your leaders. But perhaps one of your motives is political, for, strange coincidence as it may appear, just at this time there is a candidate in opposition to your views who comes from their ranks. While I just allude to the other spectre raised, whenever the devotional heart repeats the Lord's Prayer, I would earnestly beg our friends to figbt in a more Christ-like spirit. Love is stronger than ridicule; use the weapons that are worthy of our name, and successful come at last. Above all, avoid such, writing as the above, writings which while wounding the feelings of a large number of our brother Christians, are edao suicidal to the end in view by losing their valuable, though silent, help. And writings which our great founder " Wesley " would stand aghast at. And also the use of such writing will again divide as. After the longing many have for harmony and union of the Churches, there will yet be another sect called the " Prohibitionists " apart from the Wksletah. January 29th, 1896.
