FIRES.

On Wednesday afternoon dense olonds ol smoke were driven over Amberley and Sefton from a heavy fire ia the bush belaud Mount Grey. This is to be regretted, a> the Mount Grey bush was a tavourite resort for picnic parties. A tire occurred at Elleamere on Tuesday evening, and destroyed the five-roomed house and furniture of Mr S. Bash fires are raging in the Kamo district. The stores of Mr Wilben Cleary, at Puhipuhi, and of Mr P. H*usen, at Hukerenut, were burned down. They were partly insured. Several narrow escapes were reported at Puhipuhi. The kauri forest is on fire in several places, covering over ten miles of country, and doing great damage to kanri trees, both green and dry. GISBORNE, Jannary 29. The residence of Mr J. B. Taylor, of North Gisborne, was consumed by tire this morning. The insurance was £280 in the Liverpool, London and Globe. NAPIER, January 29. The Bawke'a Bay Timber Companv'd mill at Danevirke, was totally destroyed by fire between one and two o'clock this morning. The origin is unknown. Lately a considerable sum has been spent in improving the machinery. The insurance has not been ascertained. Another fire broke out at Hastings shortly after twelve o'clock last night, destroying P. A. Herman's auction mart, Palmer's (herbalist) premises. Palmer'sjun. (fruiterer's shop), and damaging Dewsnap's (Jeweller The fire originated in Herman's, which, containing inflammable contents, was speedily demolished. The good work by the brigade prevented further damape. The insurances are—Herman' stock, £800 in the Norwich Union; the building, owned by Thayee, £350 in the London, Liverpool and Globe; Palmer, £300; and Palmer, Jan., £75, both ia the North Queensland; Dewsnap's stock, £100 in the Victoria, and building, £350 in the Sooth British.
