AUCKLAND.

Auckland, December 16. Championship matches were continued on Saturday, when the Auckland and Gordon, and Parnell and United matches were resumed from the previous Saturday. In the Auckland and Gordon contest the former were defeated on the first innings by 42 runs, the scores being Auckland 74 anil Gordon 136. The remaining scores in Auckland's first innings, which stood at 52 for six wickets when play was discontinued the previous week on account of rain, were much on a par with the first day, with the exception of that of Stone, who batted in fine style for 32, adding 11 to his score of the previous Saturday. R. Neill was caught by Steele off Kallendar for 7. For Gordon Kallendar took six wickets for 22 and Williams four for 42. Gordon's innings opened inauspiciously, for two wickets were secured by F. Clayton during the first over. Ball and Cottrell, however, then became partners and before a separation was effected, succeeded in putting on 59 runs. Kallendar added a well compiled 19 before he was stumped, and Ball soon followed the latter, making 41 somewhat luckily. The only other player to offer any resistance was Hemery who played well for 21. This match gives Gordon the lead for the championship, having won the three matches of the first round. The Parnell v United match was sensational from a scoring point of view, but is attributed to the poor team of United on Saturday, with the aid of an excellent wicket." Ohlsen and Mills, the two not outs for Parnell, continued their first innings from the previous week to the bowling of Hawkins and Torr. In a very short time the pair set to work in very earnest, and despite frequent changes in bowling, they were not separated until the score reached 186, when Ohlsen made a miss hit at a ball from Watts, which looked much like a wide, the result being he' was caught by Sloman. Of the remaining players who batted, Lawson showed some splendid cricket, knocking up 78 in a very short space of time. At the close of the day Mills had 112 to his credit, and Lawson 78, and the score had reached 365 for the loss of four wickets only. The 365 runs put up by Parnell is a record, so I wire you the scores, which were as follows :— Parnell. First Innings. Wright, bD.-Hay ... ... ... 42 Ohlson, c Sloman, b Watts ... ... 87 Mills, not out ... ... ... 112 Nicholson, bC. Hay ... ... 34 Seager, c D. Hay, b Brown ... 0 A. Lawson, not out ... ... 78 Extras ... ... ... 14 1 Total for four wickets ... 365 The match is to be finished during the week.
