WELLINGTON NOTES.
[Br Teleqbaph.]
(BROJ* OUR SPECIAL 0OBBE3B0UDBUT,)
WELLINGTON, Jnne 10.
The Post sounds a note of warning as to the new paper currency, saying—" The issue of £5 posta.l n,otes is a further advance towards the establishment of a State issued paper ourrenoy. It is represented as being for the convenience of the public, but we fail altogether to see how that convenience is served by the issue of these postal notes of any denomination. This £5, like the £1 posial notes, are merely State paper currency. Their issue is intended to benefit the Government rather than meet the public convenience. They will swell the amount of money at the disposal of the Treasury, and are a fresh device for borrowing from the people and obtaining the command of money without appearing to borrow directly, We regard these postal notes as a most dangerous innovation, the thin edge of the wedge which wilj probably be attempted to be driven home by the establishment of a State Bank of Issue and an inconvertible paper currency." In the d.airy school for the South Island, at Edendale, in the Southland district, free instruction will be imparted to managers and assistants of cheese and butter factories in cheese and butter making, testing of milk and running of the separators. The students will be divided into four classes, so that during school hours one class may be always engaged in receiving instructions in ope or other of tbe four subjects s.et. forth above, each of which will be in charge of a distinct officer, whilst Mr J. B. McEvean will have general control. The course of instruction will also embrace lectures and discussions. It is proposed that the school shall open on Wednesday week, the 18th inst,, and that the course shall extend over five or sis weeks. With a view to inducing the attendance of students from Canterbury and other distant parts of the South Island, it is hoped that arrangements may be made whereby the Government will grant a refund of railway fares for those attending from a distance and completing the full terms. Arrangements are also being made to open a similar dairy school for the North Island, most probably at Stratford. It is intended cp open it on the Ist of August, and the arrangements in, connection with it will be a imtfar t3 those ! outlined above.
