ANTI-CHINESE LEAGUE.
A meeting of delegates from various organisations was held at the Temperance Hall, Gloucester Btreeb, last evening, for the purpose of forming an Anti-Chiuese League. The following Associations Avere represented—Canterbury, Ballauce, and St. Albans Liberal Associations, Fruiterers' and Market Gardeners' Associations, New Zealand Workers' Union (Christchurch), Women's Political Association, Women's Institute, and Women's section of the Canterbury Liberal Association. Thero were eighteen persons present, and Mr W. W. Collins, __.H. R., who wa3 voted to tho chair, explained the objects of the meeting. It Avas resolved, on the motion of Mr R. Winter, seconded by Mr Scho_fie_d— "Thab a League be formed, to bo knotvn as the Anti-Chinese League." Those present agreed to become members of the League, and the subscription was fixed ab Is per annum. 'Ihe following executive officers were then elected :—President, Mr W. W. Collius, M.H.R. ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs J. T. M. Hornsby and A. Cummings ; Secretary, Mr C. Scholfield ; Treasurer, Mr P. Taylor; the Committee to consist of three representatives from any number of societies Avho may be in sympathy with the movement. The following were adopted as the objects of the League :—(1) To educate public opinion, to assist all eocial movements and support all legislative efforts in the direction of restricuDg Chinese and other undesirable competitors in our colony's labour markets. (2) By raising the poll tax on Chinese to at least £100. (5) By enforcing the inspection of premises occupied by Chinese and other Asiatics (who may remain here) as shall compel methods of living analogous to those of Europeans. (4) By absolutely prohibiting the naturalisation oi any Chinese and other Asiatics. (5) By urging the Government to refuse mail subsidies to any steamer or other vessel carrying as whole or part of the crew, any Asiatic, Lascar, or Kanaka. (6) By pledging ourselves at the earliest opportunity and inducing others not to deal with any Asiatic grower or vendor of marketable products, or Avith any European retailer who supplies such products, or with any trader Avno sells or causes to be sold any other goods (which could be made by our own workers) manufactured or produced by Chinese or other allied races." It was resolved that the executive draft a code of rules and have the objects of the League printed and circulated. The meeting then terminated with a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman.
