The revenue for the year shows a decrease of £263,000 as compared with the preceding year, and is £405,000 below Sir G. R. Dibbs' estimate. In the railway revenue there is a falling off of £104,000. A SENSATIONAL EXPERIENCE. The brigautine Anthons bad a sensational experience on the voyage from Kaipari. During'a terrifio tfiunder- , storm two aerolites burst close to the vessel, and one of the crew received a severe shock. In order to prevent au accident the vessel's helm was lashed and the crew ordered below. j RABBIT-PROOF FENCING. The; efficacy of the rabbit proof fencing along the Queensland border is demonstrated by the fact that the country oa the New South Wales side of the fence is in adeplorable condition, the rabbits eating every vestige of grass, and dying in hundreds and thousands against the fence, while on the Queensland side tho grass is in a flourishing oondition and scarcely a rabbit is to be seen. SMALLPOX. i The barque Drumcraig arrived off 1 Newcastle today. She reported that ' one death had occurred from smallpox during the voyage, and another case was convalescent. The vessel was ordered on to Sydney, where she will be placed in quarantine. THE POSTAL CONFERENCE. Melbourne, January 3. The Postal Conference will probably begin on February 12th. Two important questions for discussion are tbe renewal of the existing mail contracts and the proposed discontinuance of the cable guarantee. A SERIOUS FIRE. By a fire in the furniture faotory of Messrs Falshaw Brothers, at North Melbourne, damage to the amount of £5000 was done. The insurances amount to £3600. RICH GOLD-BEARING BEEFS. Hobart/January 3, An important discovery is reported from Mount Jukes, on the West Coast, where a reef eight feet thick, and carrying gold throughout, has been unearthed. Another discovery of great value has been made ab Mount Reed, in the shape of a rich body of ore, similar in all respects to the Mount Lyell discovery. The lode is twenty-two feet wide. , When assayed it gave 9oz -dwt of gold and 1240z of silver, as well as a fair per centage of copper, to the ton.
