(PRESS ASSOCIATION ZBUORAH.) WELLINGTON, January 2. At the Chess Tournament Mackay played tho Ruy Lopez against Hookham, and at lunch had a alight advantage iv the game. In Barnes v Pleasants the former played a variation ot the Silvio Gambit. The queens are off the board, and Pleasants is ahead. A fine dashing game is in progress between Pearce and Barraud. Pearce still retains the attack, but the game is full of possibilities. Cocks declined Gilford's offer of the Evans | gambit, and the game is fairly even. i Hatbcrley played tho Scotch gambit against Wood, and has a slight advantage, Lclievre plays Edwards this afternoon, and should he win, the championship is praoti* cally decided. Dr. Hatherley won against Mr Wood, and Messrs.Barraud and Pearce drew their game. _ The game betweec Messrs Lelievre and Edwards was begun at 2.30. The opening was an irregular /one. Lelievre pressed the attack, and forced a number of exchanges which left him with a rook against a bishop, He had an undoubted win bub frittered away his advan* tage, aud the game went to Edwards; It the game between Messrs Barnes and Pleasants the former had the att&ck all the afternoou. Pleasants played a very stubborn defence with rook against knight and ~ bishop, but his pawus gradually fell, and,,., he resigned ou the sixtieth move.' ln„the , game, Gifford v Cocks, the latter lost a knight, but obtained a Btroug attacking position with two passed pawns, which ultimately led to his winning on the fiftieth, , move. The game betweeu Messrs Mackay Aud Hookkanv was even until the thirty*"" seventh move, when the former won a pawn, and later on a knight, thereafter win* - ning was only a matter of time, but Mr Hookhani played on and sacrificed a rook for a chance of obtaining a stalemate or perpetual check. .He was unsuccessful, however, and resigned on the fifty-fourth move.
