SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday. Present —Messrs D. McMillan (Chairman), H. W. Peryman, J. G. Murray, A. Wiffen, W. Boag, W. Dunlop, T. H. Anson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr Westenra.
The Chairman stated that since the last meeting correspondence had been received from the Minister of Justice, enclosing copy of warrant appointing local authorities to have jurisdiction throughout licensing districts ; return of Bealey ; Ferry traffic for six - months ending 31st December, 1893 j lettei respecting the leasing of the Rakaia Gorge Ferry ; letter from Heathcote Road Board ir reference to the application for a grant in aid, report from Mr East on the River Halswell, letter from Mr W. M.. Thompson, complaining of tlie state of the river, and a petition from settlers on the Lake flat asking for the opening up of a drain. Reports and letters on water-race matters. Mr DuNtOF had leave to postpone his notice of motion, with a view to its being submitted to the Councils and the various Road Boards for their opinion as to the best method for suppressing the small birds nuisance. The motion proposed to pay a small sum per dozen during, the winter months of the year for heads and black, birds.
AJetter was read from the Minister of Justice, enclosing copy of warrant appoint* ing local bodies to take charge of licensing districts. The Selwyn Council was'given jurisdiction in the Riccarton and Selwyn. electorates.
Messrs Colthart and Leversedge were appointed Returning* Officers respectively for Selwyn and Riccarton. The return 61 the Bealey Ferry for the six months ending December last showed that 31 people had been, ferried across, and 16s had been collected. As the lease expired next December, the question of renewal was referred to the Finance Com. mittee.
The Heathcote Road Board wrote giving particulars of the works the grant applied for was to be expended on. It was decided to grant the Board £150, £100 of which to be spent on the .Hills* borough-Opawa road and £50 on tho New Brighton road. It was resolved to invite tenders for the lease of the Rakaia Gorge Ferry reserve. Concerning the state of the River Halswell, it was decided to reply to Mr Thompson that the Council was doing tbe best it could, but while the canal works were in S ogress the river would be a little higher an usuaL
Accounts amounting to £352 7s 6d were parsed for 'payment, and ithe Council adjourned.
