NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

The Kennedy-Deering Company commenced a seasou of three nights at the Ashburton Oddfellows' Hall on Monday, when they played " My Partner" to a full and appreciative house. The annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Permanent Investment and Loan Association .will be held at the roams of Mr Charles Clark, Hereford street, this evening. By an error the meeting in connection with the proposal to establisn an Inebriates' Home was stated to take place last night. This is iucorrect. The meeting will be held in the Oddfellows' Hail at eignr. o'clock this evening. The Mayor of Chri_.tchurch will preside, and addresses will be delivered by ihe Bishop and several ministers and gentlemen.

The annual Conference of the New Zealand Wesleyan Church begins its session to-morrow evening, at 7.30, in the Durham street church. The Rev. William Keail, of Palmerston North, the retiring President, will deliver the official address, reviewing the work of the Church for the post year, and sketching the future outlook. The President, Secretary and officers for the ensuing year will be elected. The musical service will be led by the combined choirs of the city and suburban Wesleyau churches.

The Committee appointed to mako the final arrangements for the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Tinsmiths' Picnic met last evening. It was ieported that trophies had been received from inlessrs A. aud T. Burt (Dutiedin), E. Recce and Sons, Mason, Su-utjhers and Co., Ash by, Bergh and Co., Ai:keu and Roberts, Plaisted and Co., and Troupe. A good supply of toys had been obtained for the children. It was- decided that ..the party meet at Christchurch Railway Station at 8.30 to-morrow, en route for Governor s Bay. Votes of thanks were passed to the various donors of prizes. After passing a vote of thanks to the Chairman, Mr C. Colville, for the U3e of his office, the meeting terminated. A very full meeting of members of the Papanui Farmers' Club attended at the Public Library on Mouday evening, the object being to pass the catalogue of the forthcoming grain and root show, which had been drafted by the sub-committee.. In the absence of the President, Air C. Burgess, through illue3S, Mr Conway Matson was voted to the chair. A considerable amount of detail work with regard to the show was got through. It was decided to hold the show on April 19&h, all entries to bs admitted free, and to make it as popular as possible, the admission to be only sixpence. As will be Been by advertisement elsewhere, applications are invited up to the sth March for the position of House Physician of the Aucklaud Hospital for one year from April Ist. The annual meeting of the members of the Industrial Association will be held to-morrow at 8 p m. in the room behind the Oddfellows' Ha.il.

To-morrow evening the " welcome home" to Rev. Mr Merlon, lacumbeut of St. Ma.ry's, Merivale, will take place at the schoolroom. A very excellent programme has been arranged for the occasion. . The New Brighton excursion takes place to-morrow eveuing. The Engineers' .Band will accompany the excursion, aud trams will leave the square at 7.15 p.m. The Sumner tram excursion last night was well patronised, the night being beautifully fine. Tne Eugineers' Band accompanied the excursion and daucint* on the beach was iudulged iv until time to return home.

A well attended meeting of the Committee of the East Christchurch Football Club was held at the Clarendon Hotel on Monday evening. Correspondence was received from the Poneke Ciub, Wellington, relative to their annual match with this Club. It wai resolved that the match be played ou Saturday, March 24th, and that the Secretary make all necessary arrangements for a suitable ground for the contest. Two new members were elected. The Poneke players during their stay in this city will be located at the Clarendon Hotel.

A portion of Phillipstown, between Waltham road and Wilson's road, has now been taken off the police district of Sydenham and added to Constable Cullen's charge.

Gunner John Ramsbottom laherwood was yesterday sworn in as a member or the Christchurch police force, to take the place of Constable Drury, transferred to Ashburton.
