NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

The arrangements for the meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, which opens on the msw range at Hillsborough on Thursday, aro now in a forward state. Major Sommerville, Chairman of the Association, with Mi H. S. Batchelor, the local Secretary, hs« been busily engaged during the post wesk in supervising the work on the range. A large mess room has been erected of corrugated iron and timber by Mr Griffiths, the caterer, and Mr P. Burke has put up the cauteen. Water has been laid on to the camp by the Lyttelton Borough Council frptn their reservoir on the hill, and this will be a great advantage. A telegraph line wiU: also be laid on to the camp so as to facilitate the despatching of results to various -parts of the colony, and also private message;}. Arrangements have been made as for the 1887 meeting, for the Lyttelton trains to stop; at Hill's road, a point only 300 yds distant from the camp. The Rotomahana brought on Sunday last the supply of Martini-Henry ammunition from Melbourne for the meeting. Major Sommerville expects that close upon 250 competitors will take part in tbe meeting. The Auckland men have arrived, and have taken up their quarters; at the Zetland Arms Hotel until the camp is ready. Six competitors have also arrived from Kumara, and they went to Kaiapoi for practice yesterday. It is probablo a practice for the visiting competitors will be held on the Christchurch CUuYb range to-day. The Wellington and Otago men will arrive to-day. The meeting will be opened to-morrow afternoon at half-past two, the Mayoress (Mrs G».pes) firing the first shot. Elsewhere will be found a notification to competitors and markers in connection with the meeting. Any member absent at 1.30 p.m., when the roll ia called, will forfeit his place.

(PRESS association telegram.) WELLINGTON, February 27. All tihe shooting men were not able to secure passages by the Te Anau this afternoon, snd some had to wait until to-morrow.
