ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A gentleman who was crossing the Pahau yesterday while it was in flood was washed out of his buggy, but managed to get safely ashore, aud tne horses aud buggy were washed up lower down stream. Tue escape was a very narrow one. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELKGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, February 26. Running east from the Bluff wharf is a long arm of the harbour formed by a low sandy point to seaward, and otherwise surrounded by a morass. The Maori Girl, a 16ft sailing boat, which took part in the local regatta, left the wharf at ten o'clock on Sunday to go up this arm, five young men being on board : —E. McQuarrie, storeman for Waddel and Co; Andrew King, a draper ; William Wilson, storeinan for 4he J. G. Ward Association; Jas. Pleasant, engineer of the s.s. Dispatch ; aud Abraham McKenzie, a lumper. The boat did not return at night, but no alarm was felt until this morning, when search parties were sent out. McQuarrie's brother and another found the boat floating full of water, aud with the mast and mainsail gone, on the north side of the arm, and the body of Pleasant, with his outer clothing off, about fifty yards from the small jetty somedistanceaway. There is little doubt but that all have been drowned. McQuarrie's coat has been found with one sleeve reversed. The boat belonged to Wilson, who had made several alterations in her, the latest being the putting in of new bows, this being the first time she had been out since. None of the men were married. Wilson's brother was drowned by the swamping of an outrigger at Bluff Regatta about twelve years ago. The wind was not particularly strong yesterday, but was from the South or seaward side, and may have been puffy. Pleasant i 3 said to have been a good swimmer, but although the inlet is narrow he had succumbed. NAPIER, February 26. W. L. Hanwell, a general dealer, disappeared in December last. It was generally believed that he had left the district, but yesterday a Maori found his body in the lagoon near Petane. An open verdict waa returned. STRATFORD, February 26. The inquest on the man Clark, who was kilh-d by a train at Mongonui, resulted id an open verdict. The coroner is forwarding the evidence to the R.M., recommending further enquiry.
