NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

A meeting iv connection with the Approaching .Licensing Elections will take plac* this evening, at eight o'clock, in the I'iiiliipstown School. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Permanent Investment and Loan Association will be held to-morrow at 7.30 p.m., at Mr Charles Clark's rooms, Hereford street.

The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce will be held ab 3 p.m. to-day, at the 100 ms, Cathedral square. The usual weekly Sumner recursion will take place this evening should the weather prove favourable. Trams will leave the square at 7.15 and there will be a band and dancing floor on the beach. The annual meeting of St. Saviour's Guild will be held this evening at the V.M.C.A Rooms, ab 8.15.

The annual meeting of the Canterbury Caledonian Society will be held at the rooms of the Society, Hereford street, to-morrow evening. The balance-sheet and report will be presented and Directors elected. Miss A. M. Carr, teacher of shorthand, has received from England nineteen " Theory" certificates for her pupils. The pupils were examined last October by Mr T. Lisle, who reported very favourably on the work done and the papers were sent to England. The names of the successful candidates, who are now members of the Phonetic Society, are:—Misses Marion Wray, Ethel Hart, Violet Mills, Marie Louise Caro, Amy Hart, Mabel Young. Bessie Hobden, Mabel Martin, Blanche Smith, Millie Doggett, Blanche Sorreli, Agnes Carr, Charlotte Carr, Ethel Carr, Messrs W. McNamara, J. H. Robinson, VV. Wray, John Loe, Leonard Loe. An entertainment was given in the Maori Hall, Little River, on Thursday evening, in aid of the funds of the Wairewa Boating Club. There was a good attendance. Songs were contributed b_> Mesdames Fisher and Wright, Misses Buchanan, Jones and Morrow, and Messis E. Coop and Mulhern ; a violin solo by Mr Hodgkinson; a stump speech by Mr Belmere; and a farce, the principal parts being performed by Miss Morrow, Messrs Sands, Coop, Place and Belmere. The songs of Messrs Coop and Mulhern were of a comical character. The accompaniments were played by Mias A. Coop. At the conclusion, the Chairman (Mr H. White), on behalf of the Boating Club, thanked those who had so well contributed to the evening's entertainment. On Sunday afternoon, at the close of the Sunday School, the pupils attending the Catholic school of the Sacred Heart, Addington, presented their teacher, Miss M. Milner, with a handsome gold brooch as a token of their esteem and as a birthdaypresent. A number of children and residents in the locality attended on the occasion, and a member of the Addington Catholic School Committee, Mr J. Rennell, made the presentation. Mr F. Milner returned thanks on behalf of his niece.

The Annab School Committee met on Saturday evening. Present —Messrs Keys (Chairman), Halladay, Searle and Pengelly. It was decided to support Messrs Anson, Montgomery and Webb for the vacant seat on the Board; to get Mr Pole to examine the school for prizes ; and to ask Mesdames Bull and Maxwell to judge the sewiug. The Atalanto Cycling Club held their annual picnic at Governor's Bay on Saturday. A very good muster met ab the Christchurch station, and started their journey by the 1.25 train to Lyttelton, thence proceeding by wheel to their destination. The roada were in excellent condition and the weather fine. In passing Raupaki the ladies were greeted by the Maoris with a hearty cheer. A substantial tea was in readiness at Governor's Bay. On the return journey to Lyttelton the Chief Officer of the s.s. Gothic gave his consent for the Club to go aboard, and a pleasant half-hour was spent, Christchurch being reached about 8 p.m. The annual gathering of the North Canterbury Caledonian Society takes place on Thursday, and it is expected that there will be a large attendance. The entry list is much larger than on any previous occasion. The entries include—Boys' 200yda 11 entries, 100 yds handicap 31, 440 yds hnrdlea 19, 220 yds 27, mile 18, 440 yds flat 27, 880 yds 25, 120 yds hurdles 14. There were no leas than 194 entries received, of which 22 were rejected owing to non-receipt of entrance fees. Yesterday a display was made of the plate for prizes, given by the following gentlemen and firms:—The President, Messrs A. H. Turnbull, Sandabein, Mason, Struthers and Co., G. White, W.. S. Smith, McNaught, Weeber, Recce and Sons, Ashby, Bergh and Co., Petersen and Co., Coates and Co., •J. J. Wooler, J. O'Carroll, J. McMorrin, J. F. White, Harris and Co. and W. Bain (manager for Reid and Gray). The, handicaps for the events appear in our advertising columns of to-day.

A promenade concert was given in the Wesleyah Schoolroom last night in connection with the annnal harvest festival. The .programme comprised tableaux and vocal and inatromental selections. The tableaux were under the management of Misses Brocklehurst and Hall, and Mr J. L. Heath was musical director.

A-public meeting will be held to-night at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield street, at eight o'clock, to urge upon the public the desirability of establishing Homes for Inebriates. . His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch will preside, and among the speakers will be his Lordship the Bishop of Christchurch, the Revs. 0.8. Hoare and Dewsbury, Mrs Colonel Bailey, and Meaars W. G. Rusaell and G. T. Smith. The meeting will be under the auspices of the Economics Department of the Canterbury Women's Institute.

-The annual conference in connection with the _ Wealeyan Church will be held in Christchurch, commencing on Thursday evening next, when the election of President for the ensuing year and other connexional officers will take place. It is expecbed tbat the Conference will be one of the largest in connection with the Wealeyan Church that has yet been held in tha colony, about 120 ministers and laymen from different parts of the colony being expected to take part. PubUc meetings in connection with the Conference wiU take place from time to time, of which due notice will be given. On Sunday last an effort was made by means of special offerings to raise the sum required to re-shingle or cover with iron the roof of St. Mark's, Opawa. The amount required for this and some incidental works was estimated at £60. The proposal, which excited much interest and sympathy in the pariah, was carried to a successful issue. Although the weather was very unfavourable the services were well attended, and the total amount contributed at the four services of the day amounted to £58. A member of the congregation generously gave the sum required to bring the total to £60. The Yen. Archdeacon Lingard preached at the midday service, and the evening preacher was the Rev. H. B. Cocks. After the .evening service the Yen. Archdeacon Cholmondeley announced the result, and thanked the parishioners fortheir liberal response to the appeal of the vestry. A parade of the Queen's Cadets will take place on Thursday evening next, ab 7.30. instead of Wednesday, in consequence of the Drill Shed being engaged on the former evening. There will be target practice for the Corps on Saturday next at the usual hour.

On Saturday the employees in the Woolston Tannery Company, accompanied by their wives and families to the number of about 200, spent the day at Diamond Harbour. Dancing, games, races, and various sports were indulged in, the day being almost perfect for the outing. A special general meeting of the Avon Rowing Club was held in the boothouse last evening, the Captain (Mr H. Bowlker) in ihe chair. The following resolution, proposed by Mr J. McDonald, was carried unanimously:—« That in the opinion of t his meeting it be advisable to make arrangements for the carrying out of an art union for the purpose of raising funds to erect & new boatsbed." The following Committee were elected to make arrangements: —Messrs H. Bowlker, F. Foster, P. Triggs, A. Noall, J. McDonald, E. Kerridge, and J. Maxwell.

In another column Messrs Esam and Arthur of Auckland notify that they have received instructions from the liquidator to sell by au_!ioa on March 2Gth the Waikato Coal Company's mine, plant, machinery, steamer, barges, book debts, &c, either as a. going concern or in one or more lots; also in the same locality, 11,594 acres of land in fourteen lots. Plans and further particulars can be obtained locally from Messrs Tonka, Norton and Co., Colombo street, Christchurch, or from the auctioneers.

A special meeting of the Sydenham Band was held last Friday night, when it was decided to hold a grand bazaar, at a date yec to be fixed, for the purpose of raising funds to enable the band to take part in the contest to be held at Invercargill next October. A strong Committee waa elected, and it is their intention to work up a large Committee of ladies. Mr W. F. McLean waa elecbed Chairman, Mr W. Mitchell, Scretary and Mr E. W. F. Gohns, Treasurer.

The Christchurch Central Mission held services on Sunday in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield street. In tbe morning, Pastor Birch gave an excellent discourse on "The Presence of God." Messrs Dyson, Moore, Jones, Pyne, and other persons took part in the proceedings. At the Hall in the evening the Pasbor preached an eloquenb sermon. The Mission orchestra and workers rendered valuable assistance an supplying musical selections throughout, the meetings. Mesdames Bastion aud Lawrence gave a solo. Ab bhe after-meeting the Mission Christian Endeavour membera took a prominent part.
