MEMORIAL TO BISHOP HARPER.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. § IR| As an old resident in Canterbury, I wish to make a suggestion as to the memorial to our dear friend, the late Bishop Harper. It seems to mc that as his friends we ought to take care that the memorial takes a form specially calculated to perpetuate his memory. This object would not be secured by the proposed completion of the Cathedral. The proposal to place in the Cathedral a recumbent figure of the late prelate appears to vis decidedly preferable to any other scheme. Ido not believe that room cannot be found for it in the Cathedral. Even if such is the case there should be no difficulty in erecting some such portion of the building as may be requisite to provide room for the figure. I am quite convinced that if matters were now taken in hand the necessary fundssay £2000—could be readily obtained. I suggest that a list be opened by every clergyman for subscriptions of any amount in order to secure the help and sympathy of as many people as possible. One thing appears certain, that if the memorial is made to wait for the completion of the Cathedral, the satisfaction of perpetuating the memory of the late Bishop will be enjoyed only by succeeding generations and not by those now in being. Another thing v even more certain, and it is that if steps are not actively taken at once there will be no memorial at all. Movements of all kinds die a natural death in Canterbury more quickly than in any part of the world.— Youra, &c, As Ixtesding Subscriber. February 9th.
