ASSAULTING THE POLICE.
Unusually largo batches of inebriates made their appearance at the Asbbnrfcoa Police Court on Friday and Saturday. Amongst those who appeared on Saturday to answer for their folly was one who bad assaulted Constable Moor by strik* ing him on. the forehead with a fltOA* he held in his' hand. Sergeant Mow said there was a lot of drunken men about the town just now, and he scarcely ****** what to do with them. Himself and the men under him felt bound to proteofc -be public, and he would ask the Bench to protect the police from such cowardly assaults as had been committed on Constable Moor. Mr W. G. Roes, J.P., w sentencing; the assailant to three months imprisonment, remarked that so long as he was on the Bench ha would deal with the utmost severity with any cases which came before him. The police must be, protected, and he for one should do what he could to assist them iv the execution of tboir duties. Several of the inebriates who had violently resisted the police were scut to gaol without! the option of a fine. '
