His Honour Mr Justice Denniston will sit in Chambers at 11 a.m. on Monday next. The civil sitting* will commence at 11 a. m. xhe ordinary meeting of Court Star of Canterbury, A.0.F., was held on Monday evening ; C.R. Bro. J. W. Stevens in the chair. There was a fair attendance of members and several past district officers. The Woodwards reported fifteen members at present on the sick hind, the majorioy of the cases being influenza. Ooe new member was initiated. P.D.C.R. Bro. Crooks, on, behalf of the Court, presented P.C.R. Macuiu with a handsome framed certificate, also neck ribbon and the other emblems of office in recognition of the able manner iv which he conducted the business during his term of office. P.C.R. Macbin suitably tuansed the Court.

A public meetiug in connection with the urging of the necessity for the ea ablishment of Homes for Inebriates will be held in the Oddfellows' H»U on Wednesday next. The Mayor will preside, and addresses will be delivered by the Bishop of Christchurch and others.

I'he weekly meeting of the Catholic Literary Society was held on Tuesday last. The programme for ttie evening wait an exhibition of dissolving views of the Mount Cook glaciers, Alpine scenery, ani some beau til ul views of Milford Sound and Lake district scenery, by Mr F. Coopeir, who graphically described the various pictures. The last milch in connection with, the '&. Battery's belt competition and handicap series will take place at Bromley Ringe on Saturday. A conveyance will leave the Square at 1.30 prompt. i'he weekly meetiug of the Etist Belt Wesleyan Christian Endeavour Society was held on Tuesday evening, and took the form of a " Flower " meeting. The Rev. F. W". Isitt occupied the chair *nd welcomed the members of the Durham street and hit. Albaos Wesleyan Societies, of whom there were a large number present. Fraternal greetings were received from the Tarauaki street (Wellington) Society through th«ir representative, Mr Barrett. Rev. H. K. 1/uwsbnry, Mr E. C. Brown and Mr H. Craddock addressed the meeting *nd a programme of sacred music, &c., was given by the home society. A large quantity of flowers were brought by the members and were to be used by the Flower Committee iv their work at the Hospital. The Ashburton Rifle Club has been resuscitated, with a large addition of new members, and a series of shooting matches cxc being arranged.

Steps are being taken to improve the platform at the Raugiora railway station, which will probably be laid down with asphalt.

The As'tburton Polo Club had a good practice match on the ground atTinwald on Wednesday, when Mr E. Saunders'aide buat the side led by Mr Buckley. To-morrow Messrs Pyne and Co. hold a large sale of sheep at Waikari, about 8000 head having been already entered, and I/he sale will take place at the Greta Pes.ks Homestead, commencing at 11 a.m. Passenger* from Christchuich should go this evening. Toe usual meeting of the St. Michael's Temperance Society was held in the schtolrcom on Wednesday evening, when t,be Rev. Mr Northcote was in the chair. Rocitations were given by Messrs Payne, R. Johnston, Puilar, Clements, Ruddoik, Brown, and F. and R. Coombs. Two dialogues were given by C. and F. Chapmau aud Misses Debenhara and A. and N. Coombs.

The Mayor of Linwood nas granted permission for the use of the Borough Council Chambers on Friday evening for the purpose of receiving applications for registration iv connection with the licensing election in March. A.geutleman will be in attendance from 7 p. in. Meetiugq on the subject of Prohibition will be held to-morrow evening in Catnedral square, and on Sunday evening at ehe Tuam .street Hall. . To-uight in connection with Our Fathers Church au address will be delivered by Rev. J. O'U. Hoare on "Old Age Pensions and National lusurance." A general meeting of the A Company of Rifle Volunteers held at the Orderly Room after p&rade&tt*ilonday next for the election of officers. Elsewhere is announced a large sale of properties, to take place to-morrow at 2 p.m., in Messrs Matson and Co.'a land salerooms, Mark Lane Saleyards. As will be seen by notification elsewhere, Messrs O. King and Cα. will offer at their salerooms to-morrow a number of sections in Burwood. A live mile bicycle race in continuation of those already held, for a trophy given -by Mr E. R. Good and a prize awarded by she Mayor of Rangiora, was held yesterday ou the Rangiora recreation ground. The race was won by G. Jonej (300 yds), R. Cook (462 yds) 2, A. Smith (475 yds) 3, A. C. Wilmot started, bat fell out of the raoe. A conversazione in connection with the parish Church Sunday school was held in the Oddfellow* , Hall, Amberley, on Wednesday evening, and was » very great success. Excellent refreshments, were provided by the ladies ■of the parish, tind musical selections were contributed. During the evening the Sunday school prizes were handed to the scholars by Mrs Greenwood, of Teviotdale. The children had their annual treat yesterday afternoon. On Saturday afternoon the Bishop of the diocese will administer the rite of confirmation in. the parish church, aud will preach at the three services on Sunday, that in the afternoon being a united children's service. ■

The annual life saving and divine competitions of the Boys' High School took place in the school baths yesterday afternoon, ia presence of the boys, masters, and a few visitors. . The long dive was won by G. Rirton, who accomplished a distance of 112 f t; De la Mate second, 99ft The prize for the neat dive fell to A. Wilson, \Vauchop being second. There were thirty competitors for this event; The life saving competition,, which is held under the rules of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia, was gained by Waachop, with Do la Mare second. • This event was well untested, there being nine entries, the style of carrying the dummy and diving being better than in preceding year*. The winner has to show his knowledge of resuscitating the apparently drowned, and receives in due course the bronze medal of the Humane Society.
